Domaine des Varoilles

It is a dream for a proprietaire in Burgundy to have a classified vineyard entirely to the name of the domaine. The vineyard would be called a monopole. With Domaine des Varoilles, owner Gilbert Hammel boasts not one, but four vineyards in the magnificent village of Gevrey-Chambertin, including two celebrated 1er Crus “Clos des Varoilles” and “La Romanée”. The planting of grape in the former vineyard goes back to the 12th century. If Mr Hammel is not busy tending vines in his native home town by the shore of Lake Geneva or receiving guests in one of his domaines located around Europe, he will be pleased to take visitors up to the splendid vineyards in his slightly battered but otherwise reliable VW Bus. He would tell his visitors that, on a fine day, he could look beyond the mountains of Jura to his home town on the other side of the border.
